TasWater hits 75% milestone for Selfs Point sewer transformation in Hobart

TasWater has completed about three‑quarters of its Selfs Point sewer transformation, the largest infrastructure project in Tasmania. The upgrade includes an expanded Selfs Point sewage‑treatment plant, a new Macquarie Point pump station – the state’s biggest – and a 4.3 km pipeline linking the two sites. Final pipeline connections are scheduled for August, with the whole system expected to be operational in early 2027 after construction finishes in December 2026.

The project will divert wastewater from aging infrastructure, preventing an estimated 132 tonnes of pathogens and nutrients from entering the River Derwent and improving river health. It is designed to treat wastewater from roughly 40,600 existing homes and to provide capacity for an additional 8,000 new homes in the greater Hobart area. Co‑funded by the Tasmanian Government, the scheme has supported about 3,420 jobs and is projected to generate AUD 1.1 billion in economic activity once completed.
