Tata Communications to invest $450 million in India AI connectivity
Tata Communications has announced a strategic investment of approximately $400 million to $450 million to develop an “AI super highway” in India. The project involves constructing 10,000 kilometers of new long-haul fiber to create a high-speed, low-latency network fabric connecting the country’s primary AI and data center corridors.
The rollout is planned in three phases over three to five years. The first phase will focus on the Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai corridor. Subsequent phases will expand toward Visakhapatnam on the east coast, followed by routes including Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, and GIFT City in Gujarat. The initiative aims to link domestic computing hubs with international cable landing stations to support next-generation AI workloads.
This infrastructure push coincides with rapid growth in India’s data center sector. Government data indicates that India’s cloud data capacity is projected to grow nearly five times by 2030. The sector is attracting significant capital, with approximately $70 billion in ongoing investments and an additional $90 billion in announced projects. Major providers involved in the ecosystem include Google Cloud, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and domestic firms such as Jio Platforms and AdaniConneX.
