Tata Electronics' India wafer plant delayed to 2028, begins with 90nm chips

Tata Electronics and Taiwan’s Powerchip are partnering to build India’s first large‑scale semiconductor wafer fab in Dholera, Gujarat. The project was originally promoted with a 28‑nanometer production target.

Sources say the facility will initially use a mature 90‑nanometer node, moving the commercial start‑up from the planned end‑2026 to mid‑2028. The Indian government has approved a subsidy of roughly 1.28 trillion rupees (about 900 billion RMB) to support chip design, equipment and supply‑chain development. The shift underscores the challenges of creating a domestic chip ecosystem from scratch.
