Tata Group companies secure legal victories in Indian court rulings

The Orissa High Court has quashed criminal proceedings against Tata Steel regarding alleged air pollution violations committed by the former management of Bhushan Steel Limited. The court ruled that under Section 32A of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), Tata Steel is protected from civil or criminal liability for acts occurring before it acquired the company through an insolvency resolution process.

In a separate legal matter, the Supreme Court of India has granted temporary protection to Tata Chemicals against coercive action. The company is challenging a Gujarat High Court ruling concerning alleged environmental damage and land encroachment involving a marine sanctuary in the Gulf of Kutch. The Supreme Court has requested a response from the Gujarat government by November 2 while the case is reviewed.
