Tata Group faces leadership dispute and financial uncertainty

The Tata Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates, is facing an internal conflict regarding leadership and the potential public listing of Tata Sons. The dispute pits Noel Tata, chairman of the philanthropic Tata Trusts, against Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons. In a recent board vote, directors extended Chandrasekaran’s mandate by five years and moved toward listing Tata Sons on the stock exchange, decisions that contradicted Noel Tata’s position.

Simultaneously, the financial struggle involves the Shapoorji Pallonji (SP) Group, which holds an 18% stake in Tata Sons. SP Group is managing approximately $5.6 billion in debt and may need to liquidate its stake in Tata Sons to improve liquidity. This situation has placed Deutsche Bank in a precarious position; the bank helped SP Group secure high-cost debt and is now attempting to offload these assets at a premium, risking exposure to the ongoing power struggle and the valuation uncertainties of the unlisted Tata Sons.
