Tata Power Chooses Odisha for $742 Million 10 GW Solar Wafer Plant

Tata Power has selected Gopalur in Odisha, India, to host its 10‑gigawatt solar ingot and wafer manufacturing complex, valued at about ₹6,675 crore ($742 million). The decision favoured Odisha over a proposed site in Andhra Pradesh because of the state’s incentives, including a 30 % capital‑subsidy, a 20‑year electricity‑duty waiver, a ₹2 per unit power‑tariff subsidy and pre‑cleared land within Tata Steel’s special economic zone.

Chief executive Praveer Sinha said work will begin in October 2026 with the plant slated to be operational by January 2028, ahead of a new federal mandate that will require Indian solar projects to procure domestically produced wafers. The facility is positioned to serve both the domestic market and export opportunities, with the company estimating potential shipments of 2–3 GW to Europe, where most modules are currently imported from China.
