Tata Power Targets 2032 Commissioning for India's First Private Nuclear Plant

Tata Power has announced plans to build India’s first privately developed nuclear power plant, aiming for commercial operation in 2032‑33. Construction is expected to start in early 2028 once the government finalises the regulatory framework for private participation.

The utility has shortlisted three sites – in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat – and is carrying out geotechnical surveys and preparing detailed project reports. Approval procedures, including environmental and statutory clearances, are projected to take 12‑14 months. Tata Power’s CEO Praveer Sinha said the company is also awaiting long‑term uranium supply contracts and price stability to ensure financial viability.

The project follows parliamentary legislation passed last year that dismantles the state monopoly on nuclear power and opens the sector to private investors. India seeks to expand its nuclear capacity from about 8.8 GW to nearly 100 GW by 2047, a goal that will require investment of roughly ₹19.3 trillion.
