Tata Sons AGM adjourned due to lack of quorum

The annual general meeting (AGM) of Tata Sons, the holding company for the Tata Group conglomerate, was adjourned on Tuesday due to a lack of quorum. The meeting failed to proceed because the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) could not provide a joint representative, which is required to constitute a quorum.

The SRTT is currently under restrictions following orders from the Maharashtra Charities Commissioner, which has prohibited the body from holding meetings or making major decisions. This governance issue is critical as the two trusts hold nearly two-thirds of Tata Sons.

The adjournment comes at a sensitive time for the conglomerate. Current chairman N Chandrasekaran is expected to opt out of reappointment when his term ends in February, making the selection of a successor a primary focus for upcoming meetings. While directors N Chandrasekaran and Anita George were present at the Mumbai headquarters, Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata and Venu Srinivasan joined the proceedings virtually.
