Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran to step down in 2027
N Chandrasekaran has announced he will not seek another term as chairman of Tata Sons, with his current tenure set to end on February 20, 2027. The decision follows a reported six-month stalemate regarding a term extension, which was reportedly blocked by a dissenting board member.
The announcement coincided with a period of financial pressure for the conglomerate. For the fiscal year ending March 2026, Tata Sons reported a 35% drop in consolidated net profit to approximately 266 billion rupees, despite a 17% increase in revenue. This decline was largely attributed to losses in unlisted divisions, specifically within the Air India and Air India Express businesses.
As the group prepares for a leadership transition, the role of Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, remains central. While Tata Trusts holds a 66% majority stake in Tata Sons, the selection of a successor will follow formal governance processes. Attention has also turned to Noel Tata’s children—Leah, Maya, and Neville Tata—who hold various roles within the group’s hospitality, retail, and digital sectors, though none are currently positioned for the top leadership role at Tata Sons.
