Tata Sons faces leadership succession delays due to regulatory hurdles

The succession process for the chairmanship of Tata Sons has encountered regulatory obstacles. Following Natarajan Chandrasekaran’s announcement that he will step down in February 2026, the search for a successor has been complicated by restrictions on the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT).

Due to an ongoing probe, the SRTT is currently barred from internal meetings, which has prevented it from nominating a representative to the five-member joint search panel. In response, Tata Trusts—which collectively hold a 66% stake in Tata Sons—have petitioned the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner to allow the SRTT to appoint its representative to the panel.

These regulatory hurdles have already impacted corporate operations, including the postponement of the company’s annual general meeting due to a lack of quorum. The leadership transition follows the passing of Ratan Tata, with Noel Tata having assumed leadership of the Tata Trusts in October 2024.
