Tata Sons succession faces legal hurdles amid leadership search

The leadership transition at Tata Sons is facing legal complications following Natarajan Chandrasekaran’s decision not to seek reappointment as chairman beyond his term ending in February 2027. A legal roadblock involving the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) has prevented the two primary Tata Trusts from appointing a joint nominee for the upcoming Tata Sons Annual General Meeting. Due to an existing order from the Charity Commissioner, the SRTT is currently unable to meet or make formal decisions.

To resolve this, the trusts are reportedly considering approaching the Bombay High Court to secure an urgent hearing. While the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) has already formed a selection committee to recommend a successor, the inability to act jointly with the SRTT has stalled the process.

Potential candidates for the chairmanship include senior executives such as Tata Steel CEO TV Narendran, Tata Power’s Praveer Sinha, Tata Motors’ Shailesh Chandra, and Tata Chemicals’ Ramakrishnan Mukundan. Additionally, family members of Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata, such as Neville or Maya Tata, are reportedly being considered. Noel Tata has expressed a preference for sector experts over bankers to lead the conglomerate.
