Tata Steel seeks UK government talks over Port Talbot project delays

Tata Steel is seeking discussions with the UK government regarding challenges facing its £1.25 billion electric arc furnace (EAF) project at Port Talbot. The transition to lower-emission production has faced delays in securing a necessary grid connection, pushing the expected commissioning date from early 2028 to late 2028 or early 2029.

CEO T V Narendran stated that while construction is progressing, the company needs to discuss concerns with officials. Industry sources suggest that rising project costs and lost sales during the delay could lead Tata Steel to request additional funding, potentially amounting to hundreds of millions of pounds. UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds has reportedly been briefed on the matter.

The project aims to reduce site-level CO2 emissions by 90 percent, supported by a £500 million public-private funding package. However, the transition has already resulted in the loss of approximately 2,500 jobs, and the company continues to face pressure from cheap steel imports and rising operational costs.
