Tata Steel secures Supreme Court relief in Rs 890 crore GST case

The Supreme Court of India has quashed a Goods and Services Tax (GST) demand and penalty against Tata Steel. The ruling sets aside a tax demand of approximately Rs 890.52 crore, an equal amount in penalties, and applicable interest.

The dispute originated from a show-cause notice issued by the CGST and Central Excise authorities in Jamshedpur. The authorities alleged that the steelmaker had irregularly availed input tax credit (ITC) between the financial years 2018-19 and 2020-21. Tata Steel contested the allegations, maintaining that the credit was claimed in accordance with GST laws and that the company had not availed excess credit.
