Tatarstan pushes deeper economic ties with BRICS, China and India

Hosting the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan has markedly raised the Republic of Tatarstan’s international profile, according to President Rustam Minnikhanov. He said the summit will help the region attract foreign investors and expand cooperation with BRICS nations, South‑East Asia, the Islamic world and Latin America.

China remains Tatarstan’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade exceeding US$3.3 billion and accounting for about 62 % of the republic’s foreign investment last year. Chinese companies operate six high‑tech appliance factories in Naberezhnye Chelny and run a major logistics hub for container traffic between Russia and China.

Trade with India has also grown, reaching US$353 million in 2025, including agricultural exports of more than US$56 million, or roughly 10.5 % of Tatarstan’s agri‑exports. Following the summit, an Indian Consulate General opened in Kazan and a Tatarstan trade office was established in New Delhi.

Relations with Egypt have been reinforced, with bilateral trade increasing more than 8.5 times since 2020 to about US$230 million, and a branch campus of Kazan Federal University now operating in Cairo. Minnikhanov emphasized the republic’s strong industrial base, special economic zones, advanced transport infrastructure and digital leadership as foundations for further partnerships with BRICS members and other global regions.
