Tate Britain opens ‘90s: Art and Fashion’ exhibition

Tate Britain has opened a new exhibition titled ‘90s: Art and Fashion’, curated by former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful. The showcase features over 100 items, including sculptures, photographs, and garments, designed to critically reflect on the decade’s impact on the relationship between art and fashion.

The exhibition explores various cultural movements of the 1990s, such as the ‘Ladette culture’ and the rise of the Young British Artists (YBA). It highlights the work of diverse creators, including Sarah Lucas, Tracey Emin, and Chris Ofili, while also celebrating Black artists and designers like Sonia Boyce and Ozwald Boateng.

Contributors and curators note that the era is often viewed with nostalgia as a ‘pure’ time before the dominance of smartphones and social media. The collection includes iconic imagery, such as Juergen Teller’s photographs of Kate Moss, and captures the gritty, DIY spirit of the UK’s underground rave scene through the work of artists like Vinca Petersen.
