Tate Commandeur prepares for World Junior Powerlifting Championships

Tate Commandeur, a 19-year-old powerlifter from Saanich and student at Camosun College, is preparing for the World Junior Powerlifting Championships in Sun City, South Africa. The competition is set to take place from August 18 to 29.

Commandeur will compete in the 105-kilogram weight class on August 29. He secured his position at the championships after winning his weight class at the Canadian championships in March, where he achieved a combined total of 820 kilograms through a 305-kilogram squat, a 202.5-kilogram bench press, and a 312.5-kilogram deadlift.

His primary goal for the upcoming event is to break the current Canadian national record, which stands at 845 kilograms. To achieve this, he must reach a total of at least 847.5 kilograms. Commandeur has been training four days a week at the Victoria Barbell Club under the guidance of coach Jeremy Klaus, focusing on improvements to his deadlift positioning and grip strength.
