Tate McRae performance sparks controversy following Sophie Grégoire Trudeau's comments

Canadian singer Tate McRae has faced public scrutiny following her performance at the 2026 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. During the event, McRae performed her new single “Housewife,” along with “Sports Car” and “Dear God,” while wearing red lingerie.

While McRae has described the song as a manifesto of female independence, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau sparked a social media debate after commenting on a Billboard Canada Instagram post regarding the performance. Trudeau questioned the artist's choice of attire and the message conveyed, stating that while she appreciates the music and talent, she sees “nothing empowering” in the staging. She further questioned if the performance was simply “falling into the mold of people pleasing.”

McRae's supporters have defended the singer, noting that the outfit was appropriate for a lingerie fashion show and aligns with her artistic expression of freedom.
