Tatiana Navka sues EU over sanctions, seeks over €2 million compensation
Tatiana Navka, a former Olympic ice‑skating champion and wife of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, was placed on the European Union’s sanctions list in June 2022 because of her connection to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The sanctions, which include a travel ban to the EU and financial restrictions, were justified by Brussels as measures “in respect of actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.”
In May‑June 2026 Navka filed a legal challenge with the European Court of Justice, arguing that the EU did not properly state the reasons for the restrictions, that legal and factual errors were made, and that the EU failed to demonstrate a sufficient link between her and the stated aims of the sanctions. She is asking the Court to overturn the sanctions and to award damages of more than €2 million for material loss (about €135 000) and non‑material harm (over €1.9 million).
A separate EU database shows that Yekaterina Ignatova, wife of Sergei Chemezov, head of the state‑owned defence firm Rostec, has filed an identical challenge. The European Commission has defended the sanctions as justified and based on sufficient evidence.
