Tatopani border crossing partially reopens after month-long landslide blockage

The Tatopani border crossing, a vital overland trade route between Nepal and China, has partially reopened following a month-long blockage caused by monsoon-triggered landslides. On August 25, 2026, vehicular traffic resumed along the Eco section of the Araniko Highway in the Sindhupalchok district after the Road Division Office used heavy machinery to carve out a temporary single-lane track.

While the reopening allows some stranded cargo containers to move toward the customs office in Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality, the crossing is not yet fully operational. Severe road subsidence at Liping and a fresh landslide on the Chinese side of the border continue to obstruct complete cross-border movement. Approximately 85 containers remain stranded in the Liping area.

Traders and transporters have expressed relief, noting that the disruption occurred ahead of the Dashain festival season. Local commerce officials have called for sustained road maintenance to prevent further losses and ensure unhindered imports.
