Tatra mountain goat numbers rise to 786, with 95 newborns recorded
A joint Slovak‑Polish spring count confirmed that the population of the Tatra mountain goat (kamzík vrchovský tatranský) increased to 786 individuals, 46 more than the previous year. The survey recorded 95 newborns, indicating a healthy and growing population. The count, carried out by the Tatranský národný park (TANAP) in Slovakia and the Tatrzański Park Narodowy in Poland, is part of a continuous monitoring programme that has been running since 1959, making it one of Europe’s longest‑running wildlife surveys.
Park staff, volunteers and researchers noted additional wildlife activity, including wolves crossing the border and bears observed in several locations. Zoologist Jozef Hybler of TANAP highlighted that the modest rise in numbers and the more than 12 % proportion of newborns demonstrate that the species is thriving under current protection measures.
