Tatra Mountains: Czechs rank third in rescue statistics
Statistics from the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service reveal that Czech tourists are the third most frequent nationality requiring assistance in the Tatra Mountains. In 2023, Slovak citizens accounted for 48.63% of all interventions, followed by Poles at 19.36%, and Czechs at 10.12%.
Rescue officials emphasize that these rankings do not necessarily imply higher risk-taking behavior by specific nationalities, but rather reflect the high volume of Czech visitors to the region. Interventions include cases of slips, injuries, exhaustion, and individuals becoming lost due to misjudged weather or physical capabilities.
Overall rescue activity is increasing; the service reported 2,207 emergency calls and over 3,100 deployments in 2025, marking an approximately 8% increase compared to 2024.
