Tatra National Park reports bear sightings and sign vandalism

Tatra National Park is reporting several issues regarding tourist behavior and wildlife presence in the mountains.

Recent sightings of bears have been documented on hiking trails, including a specific instance near the Giewont trail. Authorities advise hikers to remain cautious, observe their surroundings, and avoid wearing headphones to ensure they can detect animals. Experts remind visitors that bears are wild animals that should be given space; one should not approach, feed, or attempt to scare them, especially when a female may be near her young.

Additionally, the park has raised concerns regarding the vandalism and theft of directional signage. Many signs are being defaced with stickers or graffiti, and some are being stolen from the trails. The park notes that approximately 100 signs must be replaced or supplemented annually using funds from entrance fees. Officials emphasized that stolen signs are not souvenirs but a safety hazard, as they can leave hikers unable to navigate the trails correctly.
