Tatsuya Kato appointed to Japan's National Intelligence Bureau

Tatsuya Kato, the former Seoul bureau chief of the Sankei Shimbun, has been appointed as a Cabinet Intelligence Analyst for Japan's newly established National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). The appointment, effective as of July 1, places Kato in a key role within the intelligence agency that serves the National Intelligence Council.

Kato gained international attention in 2014 when he was prosecuted in South Korea for defamation following a column regarding former President Park Geun-hye's whereabouts during the Sewol ferry disaster. While a Seoul court found that his reporting contained false information that defamed an individual, it ruled in 2015 that the content fell under the protection of press freedom and did not defame a public official. The South Korean prosecution ultimately dropped its appeal to facilitate improvements in bilateral relations.

Following his return to Japan, Kato published a book criticizing the South Korean judicial system. He has been working within the Japanese government's intelligence apparatus since 2021, previously serving as a Cabinet Counselor for the Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office. Reports indicate he will now focus on analyzing developments on the Korean Peninsula.
