Tatsuya Nogami signs minor league deal with San Diego Padres

Tatsuya Nogami, a 20-year-old right-handed pitcher from Osaka Sangyo University, has signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres. Reports indicate his signing bonus is approximately $300,000.

Nogami's path to Major League Baseball is considered highly unusual, as he has been playing in semi-hardball baseball (jun-koshiki) rather than the standard hardball leagues. Standing 190 cm tall, he has reached speeds of 156 km/h. Local media have highlighted his exceptional strikeout rate, noting he recorded 54 strikeouts in 25.1 innings this season, which translates to a remarkable 19.18 strikeouts per nine innings.

While there are questions regarding how he will adapt to the transition from semi-hardball to professional hardball environments, analysts suggest his ability to generate strikeouts may mitigate potential challenges regarding ball movement and hitter strength.
