Tau Protein Identified as Direct Driver in Alzheimer’s Disease

Recent research has revealed that the tau protein, long considered a marker of Alzheimer’s progression, actively drives neurodegeneration. A study highlighted that tau’s involvement goes beyond its presence in neurofibrillary tangles, suggesting new avenues for drug development targeting tau directly.

Complementary work by scientists at Stanford University School of Medicine and the University of California, San Francisco demonstrated that phosphorylated tau can enter mitochondria, disrupt the electron transport chain, and trigger reverse electron transport (RET). This mechanism links tau abnormalities to mitochondrial dysfunction across several neurodegenerative disorders, offering a potential therapeutic target. The findings were published in the journal Neuron.
