Tau Robotics launches humanoid robot cleaning service in San Francisco

Tau Robotics, a US-based startup, has launched a pilot program in San Francisco offering humanoid robot cleaning services for homes and offices. The service, which has been operational for approximately one month, has already serviced over 50 residences.

Currently, the robots—named Chelsea and Elon—can perform tasks such as vacuuming, wiping kitchen counters, and taking out trash. Each session lasts 60 minutes and costs $30 per robot. While the robots use artificial intelligence and depth data to navigate, they still require remote human supervision via virtual reality headsets to intervene if they encounter obstacles or get stuck.

CEO Alex Koch stated that each robot costs $50,000 to manufacture. The company aims to reach 1,000 cleanings per week in San Francisco by 2027, with plans to expand to other US cities and international markets by 2028. At present, the service is available by invitation only, and certain areas like bedrooms and bathrooms are excluded from standard cleaning unless specifically requested.
