Taufik Hidayat arrested in Bandung gender‑based kidnapping case

A 29‑year‑old woman identified only as YTR was held captive for about three years in a boarding house in Cileunyi, Bandung, West Java. During her confinement she suffered severe gender‑based violence that left her with permanent physical disabilities. The suspect, 30‑year‑old Taufik Hidayat, was apprehended by West Java police in Majalaya after investigators traced the couple’s relationship back to a 2024 meeting on the Tinder app and identified four locations where they lived together.

The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) called the abuse “extreme, sadistic and degrading,” and pledged protection and rehabilitation for the victim. It later clarified that the case does not yet meet the UN Convention Against Torture definition of torture, issuing an apology that sparked criticism from prominent lawyer Hotman Paris, who demanded the commission’s officials resign.

The Victim and Witness Protection Agency (LPSK) granted emergency protection to YTR, her family and two witnesses, securing legal, medical and psychological assistance. Political reactions included West Java DPRD Vice‑Chair Iswara’s proposal to impose castration on the suspect, while YTR’s brother Afif rejected any call for a death sentence, asking that the offender be handed over to the family for judgment. Governor Dedi Mulyadi and police were thanked for providing medical support and for quickly capturing the perpetrator.
