UN High Commissioner urges de-escalation amid European protests

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has condemned all acts of violence during recent large-scale protests in Albania, Belgium, France, Italy, and Portugal. Türk expressed concern regarding reports of unnecessary and excessive use of force by law enforcement against demonstrators, including minors, and called for rapid, independent investigations into allegations of illegal force.

While condemning vandalism against public and private property, Türk emphasized that individuals responsible for such acts must be held accountable. He urged states to facilitate the right to peaceful protest and to engage in constructive dialogue with protesters, particularly young people, to address underlying issues such as housing access, the rising cost of living, and inequality.

In Albania, authorities are considering strict measures in response to unrest. Proposed actions include administrative measures for families of minors involved in violence and the potential loss of financial support for students. Additionally, a working group has proposed placing violent individuals on a Schengen blacklist to prevent entry into EU member states.
