Taunton man charged with murder in fatal domestic incident

Matthew Cruz, 37, has been charged with murder following the death of his girlfriend, Shannon Smith, 37, in Taunton, Massachusetts. Authorities state that Smith was found unresponsive at the base of a staircase in a townhouse.

According to investigators and prosecutors, the incident stemmed from an argument regarding allegations of infidelity. Cruz allegedly admitted to police that he strangled Smith until she went limp. He reportedly provided conflicting accounts to investigators, initially claiming Smith had committed suicide by throwing herself down the stairs before later admitting to the physical struggle and strangulation.

Smith, a resident of Bridgewater, was described by friends as an upbeat and kind individual. Cruz is currently being held without bail in Taunton District Court as the investigation continues involving the Massachusetts State Police and local authorities.
