Taupō tourism updates: Sacred Waters renovations and Tama Lakes hiking
Sacred Waters in Taupō has undergone extensive internal and external renovations, introducing a refreshed corporate identity and an enhanced focus on guest experience. The 16-apartment management pool features individually owned and styled apartments designed by Leah-Maree Henry. New services include in-apartment facial treatments and customizable arrangements for corporate gatherings and special occasions.
In the nearby volcanic region, the Tama Lakes, known in Māori as Ngā Puna a Tama, offer a hiking destination within the craters between Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngāuruhoe. Formed approximately 11,000 years ago by explosive, water-driven blasts, the lakes are fed by rain and runoff. The trek to the lakes is a half-day undertaking involving a 17-kilometre return trip through tussock country and alpine herbfields, with the Department of Conservation grading the main track as intermediate.
