Tauron plans 7bn‑zł pumped‑storage plant Rożnów II in Poland

Tauron Polska Energia and Poland's Ministry of Energy have signed a letter of intent to develop the Rożnów II pumped‑storage power plant. The project will have an installed capacity of about 767 MW and a storage capacity of 3.1 GWh, with an estimated cost of roughly 6.8‑7 billion złoty. About 80 % of the investment is expected to be sourced locally, creating jobs and supporting the country's energy‑security strategy.

The plant will be built on the southern shore of Lake Rożnowskie, using the lake as the lower reservoir and a new upper reservoir on nearby hills in the Łososina Dolna municipality. It is intended to increase flexibility of Poland's power system, integrate renewable sources and provide a strategic buffer against energy shortages, as highlighted by Minister of Energy Miłosz Motyka and Tauron President Grzegorz Lot. Currently Poland operates six large pumped‑storage facilities; Rożnów II would become the largest of its kind in the country.

The initiative is presented as a key element of Poland's broader energy transformation and national security agenda, with government officials emphasizing the need for diversified, domestically controlled energy infrastructure.
