TAVI-PCI study examines optimal sequence for heart catheterization

A multi-center study involving 48 cardiology centers across Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland has investigated the optimal sequence for heart catheterization procedures. The research specifically addressed patients suffering from both severe aortic stenosis and coronary artery disease who are candidates for both Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI).

Presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress, the TAVI-PCI study utilized a randomized approach, assigning patients to either receive TAVI followed by PCI or vice versa, with procedures occurring within one to 45 days of each other. The study aims to determine if the order of these interventions impacts clinical outcomes such as all-cause mortality, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or the need for further revascularization procedures.
