Tavoliere, Italy: Expert Tips for Wildlife Photography Without Disturbing Animals

Photographers are advised to keep a safe distance and remain invisible when shooting wildlife in the Tavoliere plain. Use a telephoto lens of 300 mm or longer, enable silent shutter mode, and consider a blind or a car as a hide. The best light is at dawn and dusk, and shooting is limited to authorized trails.

Key locations include the wetlands between Manfredonia and the mouth of the Ofanto River, where waders, herons and marsh hawks gather, and the Oasi Lago Salso, which attracts flamingos and terns. Along canal banks such as the Candelaro and Cervaro, foxes and hares can be observed at twilight. Technical settings recommended are 1/2000 s for birds in flight, 1/1000 s for ground subjects, apertures f/5.6–f/8, and ISO 1600–3200 when needed. Use continuous autofocus with animal‑tracking or eye‑detect if available, and shoot at 5–10 fps. Dress in earth‑tone, non‑scented clothing, and move in a zig‑zag pattern to avoid startling animals.
