Tax authorities urge eTax Mobile use to combat identity theft

The Tax Department has issued an urgent advisory for citizens to use the eTax Mobile application to review their tax identification numbers. This follows reports of widespread identity theft where personal information is being used illegally to register “ghost” businesses and households. These fraudulent entities are often used for tax evasion, smuggling, invoice trading, and illegal credit applications.

In Hanoi, authorities recently disclosed over 150,000 businesses violating tax obligations, many of which were established using stolen identities. Victims often only discover they have been named as directors or business owners when checking national public services or attempting to exit the country.

Additionally, some taxpayers have reported receiving unexpected land tax debt notifications via eTax Mobile for properties they no longer own or never possessed. Users are encouraged to use the app to report any discrepancies or instances of identity impersonation by providing their ID number, contact details, and information regarding the suspected fraudulent entity.
