Taxation debates emerge in Mexico and Paraguay

In Mexico, a proposal presented by legislator Vanessa López Carrillo to the Chamber of Deputies suggests increasing the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) for the beer industry. The adjustment could raise prices by 60 cents to one peso per unit, potentially generating an additional 6,500 million pesos for the state. The proposal aims to address fiscal asymmetries, noting that while beer accounts for 93.1% of alcohol volume, it only generates 63.3% of IEPS revenue, whereas spirits contribute significantly more relative to their volume.

In Paraguay, the Paraguayan Industrial Union (UIP) has expressed opposition to potential tax increases aimed at addressing budget deficits, particularly in the healthcare sector. UIP President Enrique Duarte argued that the government should prioritize efficient resource management, combating informality and smuggling, and implementing long-delayed reforms before imposing new burdens on the formal productive sector.
