Taxi violence and accidents reported in Cape Town
A surge of taxi-related violence has impacted several areas in Cape Town, including Delft, Mfuleni, Khayelitsha, and Gugulethu. On 28 October 2026, two people were wounded in a shooting at the Palm taxi rank in Delft. This follows a previous shooting at the same location on 22 October, which resulted in two deaths and one injury.
In response to the outbreak of violence, which officials attribute to long-standing disputes over taxi routes and operating rights, the City of Cape Town temporarily closed the Delft Public Transport Interchange. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Councillor Rob Quintas confirmed that metro officers are providing policing support to the South African Police Service (SAPS) to monitor the situation.
In a separate incident on 27 October, a taxi crashed into a wall on Blaauwberg Road in Table View. One person was hospitalized following the collision, which caused structural damage to a property. While witnesses suggested a potential brake failure, the cause of the crash remains unconfirmed.
