Taxiarhis receives new pyrometeorological station for wildfire monitoring

A new automated remote pyrometeorological station has been deployed in Taxiarhis, Chalkidiki, to enhance wildfire prevention and operational readiness. Operated by the FLAME Pyrometeorological Group of the National Observatory of Athens, the station is part of the PYROMET network.

Installed at the ‘Rodamos’ guesthouse, the station provides near real-time monitoring of pyrometeorological conditions. It tracks critical parameters to calculate fire risk indices and other indicators related to fire behavior, such as dead fuel moisture and flammability. These data are used alongside numerical weather prediction models to analyze conditions conducive to the outbreak and spread of forest fires.

The PYROMET network now consists of 14 stations located in high-interest areas across Greece. The data and risk indices provided by the station are made freely available in real-time to assist authorities and stakeholders in their preparedness efforts.
