Taygetos region faces 13 million euro funding gap for infrastructure

Messenia MP Alexis Charitsis has submitted a parliamentary question to the Ministries of National Economy and Finance, Interior, and Climate Crisis and Civil Protection regarding a significant funding gap for the Taygetos mountain region.

Charitsis reports that while the total requirement for essential restoration and flood protection works exceeds 15 million euros, only 2 million euros have been secured to date. This leaves a funding deficit of approximately 13 million euros. The infrastructure in the Alagonia communities and the broader Kalamata Municipality remains severely damaged following extreme weather and heavy rainfall last winter.

The damage includes landslides, road subsidence, and significant destruction to the road network, specifically affecting routes connecting Nedousa to Mardaki and Alagonia, the Agrokipios–Alagonia road, and the Karvelio–Lada–Sparta axis. These conditions previously led to the precautionary evacuation of Ano Meria and Machala in February due to landslide risks. Charitsis is calling for a comprehensive, multi-year intervention program to ensure resident safety and regional accessibility.
