Taylor Glacier hosts unique microbial ecosystem near Blood Falls

Scientists have identified a complex microbial ecosystem living within the unique environment of the ‘Blood Falls’ in Antarctica’s McMurdo Dry Valleys. The phenomenon occurs when hypersaline, iron-rich brine emerges from fractures in the Taylor Glacier, flowing toward Lake Bonney.

The striking red-orange color is caused by the oxidation of iron when the brine makes contact with the air. Because the water contains extremely high salt concentrations, it remains liquid even in sub-zero temperatures that would freeze fresh water.

A study published in Nature Geoscience revealed that the ice, mud, and red sediments near the glacier host a community of microorganisms, including eukaryotes such as diatoms, dinoflagellates, haptophytes, and ciliates. Genetic analysis suggests that over 60% of the diatoms found in the red sediment share ancestral links with marine organisms.
