Taylor Knibb wins IRONMAN World Championship in dramatic Hawaii finale
The 2026 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, concluded with high drama in both the men's and women's races. Taylor Knibb of the United States claimed the women's world title with a time of 8:36:29. Knibb secured her victory following a dramatic final kilometer where she overtook defending champion Solveig Løvseth, who collapsed from exhaustion and cramps just short of the finish line. Løvseth eventually completed the race in eighth place.
German triathlete Laura Philipp secured the silver medal after a significant comeback. Despite a difficult start in the swimming portion, Philipp moved through the field during the marathon to finish second, completing her collection of world championship medals. Swiss athlete Julie Derron took third place. Philipp's performance also earned her the overall 2026 IRONMAN Pro Series title.
In the men's competition, Vincent Luis of France won the world title with a time of 7:47:27, followed by Gustav Iden of Norway and Matthew Marquardt of the United States. The race was marked by several high-profile withdrawals, including three-time champion Patrick Lange, who was forced to abandon the race during the cycling portion due to severe cramps.
