Taylor Swift fans rationalize private jet use to protect fan identity

A study published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media suggests that devoted fans of Taylor Swift may downplay environmental concerns to reconcile their fandom with the singer’s high carbon footprint. The research focused on “emerging adults” (Generation Z), a demographic typically characterized by high levels of environmental awareness and climate anxiety.

Researchers found that highly identified fans utilized moral reasoning strategies, such as “decoupling,” to rationalize the excessive CO2 emissions caused by Swift’s private jet use. This rationalization was linked to lower personal CO2 concerns and a decreased intention to engage in climate-friendly behaviors. The study noted that Swift’s private jet use has been identified in previous data as producing significantly more carbon pollution than the average person generates annually.

The study involved approximately 1,000 undergraduate students in the United States, testing how news coverage of celebrity emissions affected their moral reasoning compared to news about general celebrity pollution.
