Taylor Swift releases ‘Patient Zero’ amid industry criticism

Taylor Swift has released the song ‘Patient Zero’ as part of her extended album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl: Encore’. The track features a cinematic music video directed by Swift, starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. The video, described as a gothic thriller, explores themes of infidelity and a deteriorating marriage.

At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, Swift received the inaugural Artist Director Honors and won Video of the Year for ‘The Fate of Ophelia’.

In contrast to the creative output, musician Todd Rundgren has criticized Swift’s impact on the industry. In an interview with Vulture, the 78-year-old rock musician described Swift as the ‘apotheosis of mediocrity’ and suggested she has ‘ruined music.’ Rundgren attributed the current dominance of female artists to a shift in the music market that occurred when male consumers began spending more on video games than music in the 1990s.
