Tbilisi begins demolition of modernist Rike Tubes complex

Demolition work has begun on the Rike Park Music Theatre and Exhibition Hall, commonly known as the ‘Rike Tubes’, in Tbilisi, Georgia. The modernist glass-and-metal structure was designed by the Italian firm Fuksas Studio and constructed between 2011 and 2012 during the administration of former president Mikheil Saakashvili.

The project has become a point of political and cultural contention. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze previously criticized the design, stating, “This ugliness does not befit our beautiful capital.” While the complex has remained largely unused and unfinished, its removal has sparked outcry from residents and the original architects. Massimiliano Fuksas noted that the firm received significant support from those who view the building as an iconic part of the city's skyline.

Demolition of the 10,000 square metre structure began in late July and is scheduled for completion by December 25. The dismantling follows a decision by the Tbilisi City Hall’s Architecture Service in June.
