Tbilisi opposition launches protest campaign against Bidzina Ivanishvili
The Opposition Alliance, a coalition of nine political parties, launched a protest campaign in Tbilisi under the slogan ‘Georgia Without Ivanishvili. Georgia Deserves Better’. The march, which moved from Tbilisi State University to Rustaveli Metro Station, marks the beginning of a series of demonstrations intended to culminate in a major rally on November 28.
November 28 marks the second anniversary of the announcement by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze that Georgia would suspend its European Union integration efforts until 2028. The opposition is demanding a return to the path of EU integration, the repeal of anti-democratic laws, and the holding of early parliamentary elections, as many citizens do not recognize the results of the 2024 elections.
The protests occur amid legal proceedings by the ruling Georgian Dream party to ban opposition parties through the Constitutional Court. Demonstrators also called for the release of political prisoners, noting that Georgia currently holds approximately 150 prisoners of conscience, including media founders such as Mzia Amaglobeli.
