TBM component arrives in Łódź for High Speed Rail tunnel construction

The final and largest component of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is currently being transported to the construction site in Łódź, Poland. This 145-ton cutting shield, measuring 8.4 meters in diameter, marks the completion of a complex logistical operation involving the transport of machine parts from the Herrenknecht factory in Schwanau, Germany.

Following its arrival at the starting chamber in the Retkinia district, specialists from the construction company PORR will begin the assembly and testing of the machine. The TBM is a critical element for the construction of the High Speed Rail (KDP) tunnel, which will be 4.6 km long and 14 meters wide. The tunnel is part of the ‘Y’ infrastructure project intended to connect Warsaw via the new airport with Łódź, Wrocław, and Poznań.

Drilling is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2027. The use of this TBM is intended to ensure high precision and minimize the impact of construction activities on the city's surface.
