TCG Izmir begins sea trials for Turkish Navy's second Istif-class frigate

The Turkish Navy has commenced sea trials for the TCG Izmir, the second Istif-class multi-purpose frigate developed under the national MILGEM program. Built by Anadolu Shipyard in partnership with STM Defence and the TAIS consortium, the 113-metre vessel is designed for anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare, as well as reconnaissance and surveillance.

A notable technical feature of the TCG Izmir is its expanded MIDLAS vertical launch system (VLS) compartment. While it maintains 16 cells, the compartment is deeper and larger than that of the lead ship, TCG Istanbul. This modification may allow for the deployment of larger weaponry, such as SİPER family air defense interceptors, GEZGİN cruise missiles, or vertically launched ATMACA anti-ship missiles.

The ship features over 80 per cent local content, exceeding the initial 75 per cent goal to reduce foreign dependency. Armament includes a 76mm naval gun, a 35mm close-in weapon system, 25mm autocannons, torpedoes, and various missile systems. Current sea trials will evaluate propulsion, stability, maneuverability, navigation, communications, and combat management systems.
