Táchira border clash between GNB and ELN leaves one dead

An armed confrontation between the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB) and members of the National Liberation Army (ELN) has resulted in one death and at least five injuries in the Junín municipality of Táchira state, near the Colombian border.

According to Javier Tarazona, director of the non-governmental organization Fundaredes, the clash occurred in a rural, difficult-to-access area. The injured individuals were reportedly transported to a clinic in Rubio for medical attention. As of now, Venezuelan authorities have not released an official report to confirm the identities of the victims or the specific affiliation of the deceased.

Fundaredes noted that this is reported to be the first confrontation between Venezuelan security forces and the ELN since the inauguration of Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella in August. The incident occurs in a border region characterized by high mobility of armed groups and illicit activities. Human rights organizations have expressed concern regarding the impact of such violence on civilian communities in the border zone.
