TCL sues Samsung over alleged deceptive Mini LED advertising

TCL has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics America in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, alleging deceptive advertising regarding Mini LED technology. TCL claims that certain Samsung models marketed as ‘Mini LED’ are actually standard LED televisions or rebranded entry-level Crystal UHD models that lack true Mini LED backlighting. TCL asserts that this practice allowed Samsung to undercut prices, leading to a fourfold increase in Samsung's sales in that segment within three months and causing TCL to lose market share in the U.S. Mini LED market.

Separately, market analysis from Omdia indicates a shift in the global television industry. While the overall global TV market is projected to shrink by 1% annually through 2027, the high-end segment—models priced above $1,000—is expected to grow by 9.3%. This growth is particularly strong in North America, with a projected 21.9% increase in high-end shipments. Manufacturers are increasingly focusing on premium models to offset rising component costs and memory shortages. Additionally, RGB LED technology is forecasted to gain significant ground, potentially capturing 49% of the high-end market by 2030 as it approaches the market share held by OLED.
