TCL unveils SQD Mini LED TVs as experts highlight Mini LED limitations

TCL announced a new line of Mini‑LED televisions that incorporate its “Super Quantum Dot” (SQD) technology. The approach combines quantum‑dot colour filters with Mini‑LED backlighting to widen the colour gamut and improve colour accuracy, while the Mini‑LED array maintains high brightness. Prices start at $1,795 for a 55‑inch model and go up to $15,000 for a 98‑inch flagship, with the SQD variant positioned alongside other TCL Mini‑LED models such as the C7L and C8L.

Industry analysts and consumer‑tech reviewers note several inherent drawbacks of Mini‑LED LCD panels. Because they still rely on LCD panels rather than self‑emissive pixels, deep blacks can appear grey, especially on lower‑cost units. The “bloom” or halo effect around bright objects on dark backgrounds remains a concern, as does reduced colour fidelity when viewed off‑axis due to the VA panels many manufacturers use. Additionally, response times can lag behind OLED panels, potentially causing motion blur in fast‑moving gaming or sports content.
