TCM experts warn of summer health risks from air conditioning and heat

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners are highlighting specific health risks associated with summer conditions, including air conditioning sickness and increased stroke risks.

Regarding air conditioning sickness, TCM physician Wu Ming-chu explains that prolonged exposure to low-temperature, dry environments can lead to symptoms such as headaches, respiratory issues, muscle stiffness, and digestive discomfort. High-risk groups include office workers, women with cold constitutions, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. Prevention methods include maintaining indoor temperatures between 26°C and 28°C, using humidifiers, and applying acupressure to points like the Fengchi and Taiyang.

Separately, Dr. Chu Yi-Chih warns that extreme summer heat can increase stroke risk by depleting vital energy and increasing blood viscosity. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining kidney and heart health through proper sleep and hydration. Research cited indicates that irregular sleep patterns—either too little or too much—are linked to higher stroke incidence and mortality. Recommended preventative measures include consuming hydrating drinks like coconut water or lemon honey water, and utilizing acupressure on points such as Baihui and Neiguan to stabilize the mind and body.
